Every member of the Virginia Land Title Association plays a vital role in the legislative success of our organization. Grassroots advocacy is one of the most effective tools we have, and at the state level it can make a significant impact.
The VLTA Legislative Committee meets monthly throughout the year and weekly while the General Assembly is in session. These meetings allow us to monitor legislation closely, advance policies that support our industry, and work to prevent unfavorable bills from moving forward. The committee shares its meeting minutes with the membership and encourages all VLTA members to stay informed about the discussions and decisions shaping our advocacy efforts in Virginia throughout the year.
As a VLTA member, you can make a meaningful difference in VLTA’s advocacy efforts by following a simple three-step process: know your legislators, meet with them, and stay engaged. Every Virginian has both a State Senator and Delegate who represent them in Richmond. Taking time to learn about your legislators—their district, party, and committee assignments—is an easy first step. From there, follow them on social media and pay attention to town halls or community events they host. Attend an event, introduce yourself, and when appropriate, request a one-on-one meeting. Remember, you are their constituent—your voice matters.
Maintaining these relationships is equally important. Stay in touch with their office, get to know their staff, and schedule a meeting during the legislative session if possible. Legislators have demanding schedules, so don’t be discouraged if you connect with a staff member instead. Their staff play a key role in shaping policy and advising legislators.
Engaging with legislators doesn’t require you to be a policy expert. Approach conversations as a professional in your field and share your perspective from a title standpoint. Personal connections often make the difference between advancing good legislation and stopping harmful proposals before they become law.
VLTA Legislative Breakfast: Why Your Attendance Matters
One of the best opportunities to strengthen these relationships is by attending the VLTA Legislative Breakfast. This event brings together members of our industry, elected officials, and industry partners in an informal setting where meaningful conversations can happen. Your presence demonstrates that our profession is united, informed, and engaged in shaping public policy. By attending, you not only help amplify VLTA’s collective voice but also show your commitment to protecting the integrity of Virginia’s land title industry.
